While seldom discussed in public places, Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) tend to be more common than we think. That is especially so among teenagers, or maybe more accurately, anyone who is sexually active.

 

STIs identifies any infection that's passed from anyone to another through sexual intercourse (this also includes oral and anal sex); sometimes through direct contact with the genitals.

 

What are STDs?

STDs (Sexually Transmitted Diseases) are bacteria, viruses and parasites which are transmitted from anyone to another primarily during sexual intercourse. STDs can infect the penis, the vagina, the anus, the throat and even the eyes. Certain STDs can also cause symptoms in places other compared to sexual organs.

 

Like, Syphilis may result in an allergy that covers the complete body including the palms and the soles. In reality, more worryingly, many STDs can infect a person and stay completely invisible without causing any symptoms (also known as asymptomatic infections).

 

These cases are particularly challenging as patients do not know they've been infected, and therefore do not get tested and treated. Then they not just potentially suffer serious longterm complications due to the infection, but they can also unknowingly pass the infection onto others.

 

Regular STD Screening

Regular screening for STDs is advised for several sexually active adults no matter whether they have symptoms. Irrespective of regular screening within an extensive health maintenance schedule, STD screening can also be frequently done by people starting a new sexual relationship, getting married or entering into a long term monogamous relationship.

 

Certain requirements for STD screening be determined by the patient's sexual practices. A blood test is usually required. And, with respect to the individual's sexual practices, a urine sample, vaginal swab, throat swab or an anal swab are often required.
